Opening Session: Warning Signs of Workplace Violence

8:30-9:45am

“Most of the attackers had exhibited behavior that elicited concern in family members, friends, neighbors, classmates, co-workers, and others, and in many cases those individuals feared for the safety of themselves or others” (US Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center). Understand these “Pre-Incident Indicators” of violence and identify where a person is on the “Pathway to Violence”.

Mental Health Contributors to Violence

9:45-10:30am

Mental health can be a significant factor in workplace violence, though it’s important to recognize that mental illness alone is not a predictor of violent behavior. Various contributors to workplace violence related to mental health can include workplace stress, poor work-life balance, substance abuse, trauma and more. This session will guide you through what contributors to look for that might impact behavior in the workplace and how you can help mitigate and protect your people. Attendees will be given a practical guide to identifying, assessing and managing individuals of violent intent.

De-Escalation Strategies and Skills

10:30-11:30am

As stress increases across our society, anger and conflict have increased as well. For many, physical violence is becoming an ever more acceptable answer to problems, even in the workplace. Very few people have had an opportunity to learn how to successfully navigate these stormy seas. Until now. Drawing on expertise from fields as diverse as psychology, crisis management, mental health, law enforcement, and more, this session is comprehensive in its approach to safety in interpersonal conflict. Although there is a strong emphasis on verbal skills, other factors include body language, proxemics, and proper mindset. Attendees will walk away feeling empowered and fully prepared to respond appropriately to any situation both at work and in life.

Managing High Risk Terminations

12:45-1:45pm

When doing a termination interview you have probably experienced some level of fear and worry about how to keep yourself and your people safe. There are many factors to consider: When do you have the meeting? Where? Who should be in the room? What is the right thing to say? This session will take a deep dive into our 10 Tips for Troublesome Terminations. Potential violence is an existential problem and HR is on the frontline at work. Take the fear out of termination interviews by learning how to be in control.

Keynote Speaker Aaron Stark: "I Was Almost an Active Shooter"

1:45-2:45pm

As a dark and destructive teen, Stark almost committed a terrible attack. He now travels the country speaking to help prevent the next potential him from happening. His presentation is emotional but uplifting, sharing how to identify and talk to those people on the edge or in the depths of depression. His main message is "Give love to the ones you feel deserve it the least, they need it the most." He shares his story in hopes of improving methods and techniques when dealing with those on the edge of darkness.

Active Shooter Training-The New Standard

2:45-4:00pm

There is one thing that you can say for sure about the active shooter problem. It's getting worse. Yet, most organizations are still responding in the same way they did 20 years ago. And it's not working. But there is something that does work. It's called Threat Assessment and Management and it's used by agencies like the United States Secret Service every day. We stress prevention and recognition of established warning signs that can often be seen months in advance. Tim Keck will give real life examples and scenarios teaching you this new standard and how to keep yourself and people safe.
